First Round of Scholarship Grants and Awards for 2023 Announced by the Foundation

The Foundation is proud to announce the award of two of our first awards and scholarships for the year 2023.

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY – BRIDGET NESKO MEMORIAL COURAGE AWARD

Less than six months after Bridget Nesko’s death, her Foundation proudly awarded the Bridget Nesko Courage Award to Arzoo K. Bashir R.N., DNP, at George Mason University College of Public Health ceremonies, held on the George Mason University campus on May 5, 2022.

Dr. Bashir was selected for her hard work and dedication, despite significant health issues, in completing her doctoral degree from the University. A biography of Doctor Bashir, who has agreed to serve s a member of our Medical Advisory Board, will be posted shortly.

Presenting the award to Dr. Bashir is Cheryl A. Oetjen, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, Interim Chair, Nursing and Associate Professor, and Jamie Austin, Corporate Board Secretary for the Bridget Nesko Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc., Trustee, and Director of the Foundation’s George Mason University Support Initiative.

LITTLE FLOWER HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, PHILADELPHIA, PA – BRIDGET NESKO LEADERSHIP AWARD

Graduating Senior Meagan Leary was recognized as the award recipient of the first Bridget Nesko Courage Award in early June, 2023 by the staff and faculty of Little Flower High School for Girls in Philadelphia.  According to School officials, Ms. Leary is attending Nursing School in the Fall of 2023.

Photographs and a biography for Ms. Leary will be posted shortly. The award is overseen by Frances Armstrong Russ, Medical Professional and 1985 Little Flower High School graduate. Mrs. Russ was a good friend of Bridget’s when she attended the High School and remained close until the time of Bridget’s death, on November 22, 2022. Mrs. Russ is a Trustee for the Foundation and serves as the Director of the Foundation’s Little Flower High School Support Initiative.
